Ruling ‘undermines’ DUI case vs. Miss May

A Cook County judge has sided with a Playboy model who maintains that she shouldn’t have been arrested for DUI after police pulled her over for running a red light on the Near North Side earlier this year.

Though prosecutors still can appeal Judge Thomas V. Lyons’ ruling Tuesday, Crystal McCahill’s lawyer said the case against his client is now “severely undermined.”

“She’s delighted,” attorney Michael J. Monaco said of his client, who was Playboy’s Miss May 2009.

The 5-foot-7-inch brunette had a blood-alcohol level more than twice Illinois’ standard for DUI when she drove a 2005 Volkswagen Passat through a red light at Chicago and Wood last Jan. 7, according to police.

The police said McCahill told an officer: “I had three shots at Climax nightclub, where I work.” The police said McCahill “mumbled,” had a “strong odor” of alcohol on her breath and had “red-bloodshot and glassy eyes.”

In court on Tuesday, Monaco didn’t question the reason for the stop. But he disputed police claims that McCahill voluntarily accompanied an officer to the District 13 station. Monaco said she believed she was under arrest — and there wasn’t sufficient reason to make the arrest because the officer had not yet performed a field-sobriety test. Tests were done later at the police station, Monaco said.

“If he’d done them on the scene and she’d failed them, it probably would have been a different result,” Monaco said.

Roderick Drew, a Chicago Police spokesman said: “We believe that the officer acted appropriately and consistently with our policies, and the evidence indicates that she was, in fact, intoxicated.”

McCahill is due back in court next month.

The Fifty/50 club in Wicker Park wants its porn back.

One of the bar’s vintage Playboy magazines was stolen over Labor Day weekend and the guys running the bar are all torn up.

An unidentified thief punched out a Plexiglas display case that housed the issues and swiped the May 1970 edition that featured Phyllis Babila on the cover, according to the bar manager.

Besides bare, pillowy bosoms, the mag’s got sentimental value — it’s part of a collection of smut that an uncle bequeathed to the bar owner, Scott Weiner.

Weiner wants the mag returned.

He’s offering a $100 gift certificate to the bar and a copy of this May’s issue of Playboy signed by centerfold Crystal McCahill — who may or may not have been hanging out at the bar before she was arrested for drunken driving earlier this year.

Wiener hasn’t filed a police report yet and he says he’ll take the mag back, no questions asked.

Glamourcon is a convention celebrating the glamour arts and has every type and stripe of pinups from past and present as well as pinup art and photography.   This year at the Crowne Plaza O’Hare it was dominated by dozens of Playboy Playmates and especially a strong contingent from the 70′s–the Golden Age of Playboy.  My fellow Playmates this year included Patti McGuire Connors (Playmate of the Year 1977) , Sondra Theodore (Hef’s one-time girlfriend and Playmate for July 1977), Sylvie Garant (November 1979), Laura Lyons (former Jet Bunny on Hef’s plane and Playmate for Feb. 1976), Janet Lupo (November 1975) and Monica Tidwell ( November 1977 who had an off-Broadway show called “Mind Game”).

Among other Playmates attending were this year’s Playmate of the Year Ida Ljungvist, Julie Cialini (Playmate of the Year 1995), DeDe Lind (August 1967) and Cathy St. George (August 1982).  There was also a mother/daughter set of Playmates; Gale Olson (August 1968) and her daughter Crystal McCahill (May 2009).  One of the original playmates after Marilyn Monroe, Dolores Del Monte (March 1954) was there too. This event had a lot of firsts and one of them was having the oldest attendee, Herbert Lakin, at 97 years of age.  One fan even brought the back plate from Hef’s famous pinball machine for Patti and Sondra to sign!  Another fan. Larry Armstrong,  had the original copper plate of DeDe Lind’s centerfold that he had bought on Ebay!  My friends from the 70′s were all in a row and we had a blast.  It was so much fun to see so many fans who love and know the wonderful history of Playboy.  Thanks to Bob Schultz for keeping the dream alive via Glamourcon.  The next event will be in November in L.A.  Hope to see you all there!

Playboy hunting for Chicago Bunnies

First of all, if HR decides to come down and inquire about the Web sites we’ve been looking at today, we’re chalking it all up to “research.” Need to get that out of the way.

Second of all, if you think you’ve got what it takes to pose in the world’s most famous skin magazine, here’s your chance Chicago.

Playboy is hunting for bunnies on Tuesday and Wednesday this week at the W Lakeshore.

Around 250 women showed up on Tuesday, and even more are expected on Wednesday.

It’s a chance for the girls to get the “full Playboy experience,” which includes lounging in a satin robe while they’re waiting for their time slot, and interviewing with various Playboy editors. And of course, posing.

“If they’re comfortable going completely nude it’s up to them, but we recommend they at least wear lingerie or a bathing suit,” said Playboy publicist Tina E. Manzo.

So what are the chances a Chicago gal can actually make the pages of the magazine? Look no further than Crystal McCahill, Playboy’s Playmate of the Month for May 2009.

‘Miss May’ gets new lawyer in DUI

Crystal McCahill, Playboy magazine’s “Miss May 2009,” switched attorneys today in a hearing in Cook County Traffic Court on her drunken-driving case.

Michael J. Monaco, a prominent criminal defense and DUI attorney, filed his appearance today and entered a motion to quash evidence in the case, which stems from a January drunken-driving arrest.

Police stopped McCahill after she ran a red light Jan. 7 at Chicago Avenue and Wood Street, according to a published report. McCahill, 25, showed blood-alcohol levels more than twice the legal limit, according to a police report.

Today McCahill, dressed in black and wearing cheekbone-hugging sunglasses, declined comment but asked reporters if they were coming to a Playboy party tonight.

Club Crescendo, a downtown nightclub, is having a signing party for the May issue of the magazine starting at 10 p.m., according to the club.

McCahill is next scheduled to appear in court July 10.

Playboy centerfold Crystal McCahill — Miss May 2009 — made a brief appearance in court this morning in connection with her DUI case.

McCahill — dressed all in black, with black sunglasses — showed up at the Daley Center courtroom by herself, and teamed up with her attorney inside.

Her attorney filed a motion to suppress evidence in McCahill’s Jan. 7 DUI arrest. The case was then continued to July 10.

Before the hearing, McCahill politely refused to talk about her case — but asked reporters if they were coming to her Playboy autograph-signing event at Club Crescendo nightclub later today.
